Javanese traditional batik, especially from Yogyakarta and Surakarta, has meanings rooted in the Javanese conceptualization of the universe. Traditional colors include indigo, dark brown, and white, representing the three major Hindu gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. This is related to the availability of natural dyes, which are most commonly indigo and brown. Certain patterns may be worn only by nobility; traditionally, wider stripes or wavy lines indicated higher rank.
